The first round of the NBA playoffs has some extra excitement, as we have some very interesting and surprising seedings across both conferences. Not only are the seventh-seeded Lakers the most surprising seed, but they are also taking on the mostly-young Phoenix Suns in a very captivating battle. We also get the chance to see the New York Knicks with home court. The Mecca will be rocking with the Knicks’ first playoff series since 2013. New York will be hosting the Atlanta Hawks.
Meanwhile, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and the Clippers are the fourth seed, and they are taking on Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. In the first round last season, the Clippers defeated the Mavericks in six games. Another battle will be Bradley Beal, Russell Westbrook, and the Washington Wizards bringing their strong grit to Philadelphia to take on Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and the 76ers.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at the two most exciting series of the first round:

FiveThirtyEight prediction: Suns win the series (51%)
Series Preview: For the first time in three decades, the seven seed entered the series favored over the two seed. The defending champion Lakers are finally healthy, and they are going after the Suns, who finished just one game away from having the best record in the NBA during the regular season. Yet, Phoenix is extremely underrated heading into a series in which Chris Paul and company have home court. Do not sleep on Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton, but this Lakers team did not start a healthy lineup against them in any of their three meetings during the regular season.
Game 1 Recap: Even with Chris Paul leaving the game momentarily and Cameron Payne being ejected, the Suns were in control of this game from midway through the first quarter all the way to the final whistle of the 99-90 victory. In Phoenix’s first playoff appearance since 2010, Devin Booker went for a game-high 34 points, and Deandre Ayton chipped in 21 points on 10 of 11 shooting to go along with 16 rebounds. No Lakers player scored more than LeBron James and his 18 points. He made three of his seven 3-pointers while the rest of the team made only four of their 19 attempts from downtown. Anthony Davis scored just 13 points (5-for-16 shooting) in a team-high 39 minutes. James, Davis, and the Lakers will look to bounce back in Game 2.
Eastern Conference
(3) Milwaukee Bucks lead the (6) Miami Heat, 1-0; Game 2 tips off 7:30 pm ET on Monday, May 24
Remaining Schedule for the Series:
Game 3. Thursday, May 27 at 7:30 pm ET
Game 4. Saturday, May 29 at 1:30 pm ET
Game 5. Tuesday, June 1, time TBD (if necessary)
Game 6. Thursday, June 3, time TBD (if necessary)
Game 7. Saturday, June 5, time TBD (if necessary)
FiveThirtyEight prediction: Bucks win the series (85%)
Series Preview: In the 2020 playoffs, the defending Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat surprised the NBA world by dominating the conference with relative ease. In the first round last season, the fifth-seeded Heat swept the Pacers and then were the underdogs against the Milwaukee Bucks. All of the sudden, the Heat jumped out to a 3-0 series lead against the Bucks en route to winning the series in five games. Miami will be looking to defeat the Bucks once again. Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo needs to right the ship against the Heat. He has to win the battle against opposing big man Bam Adebayo, while Bucks fans are hoping that Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday will step up to give the Fiserv Forum crowd something to cheer about in the first round.
Game 1 Recap: The overtime thriller to start the NBA playoffs was a game for the ages. Bucks fans were ecstatic with 0.5 seconds remaining in overtime on Saturday. Khris Middleton faded to his right and drained a 19-footer with Duncan Robinson in his face to give the Bucks a 109-107 lead. On the final possession of the contest, Jimmy Butler attempted to win the game from the corner, but Jrue Holiday impressively blocked the shot to secure the victory for Milwaukee. Giannis Antetokounmpo (26 points, 10-for-27 shooting, 18 rebounds) was called for a 10-second free throw violation near the end of regulation, which was one of the reasons the game went into overtime. Goran Dragic (team-high 25 points of the bench) and Duncan Robinson (24 points) led the Heat in scoring, but Milwaukee’s main four scorers were too much for Miami: Middleton (game-high 27 points), Holiday (20 points), and Brook Lopez (18 points) made up for the lack of scoring on the bench to get the Bucks the much-needed win to start the series.
